Intonation with English Advanced 1 learners


Today is our first day together.
 
Necesitamos una actividad para calentar y que rompa un poco el hielo. Se trata de un ejercicio para practicar la intonationSe trata de un grupo de nivel avanzado. Empezamos recordando en grupo unas nociones básicas :


The table below provides a useful summary, and might be adapted or used for classroom practice. 
Rising or falling Example Indication
a) Falling on a statement He's moved to Glasgow.

I'm telling you something I think you don't know.

b) Falling and rising within a statement He moved to Glasgow (about a year ago).

I haven't finished yet (there is more information to come).

c) Falling on a question Where do you live?

I'm asking a genuine question.

d) Rising on a question Where do you live?

I know you've told me before, but…

Remember that a falling tone also includes a rise-fall, and a rising tone includes a fall-rise. By far the two most common tone choices are the fall and the fall-rise. So, these are the ones which students are most likely to need to interpret when they are listening to English being spoken.

Una vez hemos comprobado esos aspectos, pasamos a practicar un poco. En este caso pondremos en práctica una actividad llevada a cabo en Cork. Se escoge una palabra y se utiliza para representar diferentes situaciones dándole diferentes entonaciones. En Cork, la palabra fue "potatoes". Aquí utilizaremos "banana".Será en parejas. Cuando una pareja esté desarrollando su situación, el resto tendrá que adivinar de qué se trata. Sirva como ejemplo las situaciones que adjuntamos a continuación
